With great virtualisation comes great responsibility!

ESX 3.5 Update 2

With the release of Update 2 for ESX, there are some truly awesome functionality released!!

Starting with ESX 3.5 Update 1 and including later update versions, ESX supports up to 192 virtual CPUs (vCPUs). Previous versions supported up to 128 vCPUs. This change leverages newer, high capacity systems with faster physical CPUs.

The default setting for vCPUs on ESX 3.5 Update 1 and later versions remains at the lower maximum limit of 128.

If you raise the number of vCPUs, be aware of the following limitations: * The number of virtual machines that can be run with acceptable performance continues to depend on the load of the virtual machines and the ESX system’s hardware. * The maximum number of virtual machines per host is 170. * No more than three virtual floppy devices or virtual CD-ROM devices can be configured across all virtual machines on the host, at any given time.

How To Enable
To increase the maximum vCPU limit to the new, higher value:

In the VI Client, go to the Configuration tab and choose Advanced Settings.
In the Advanced Settings window, change the value for RunningVCpuLimit? to 192.
The increased maximum limit takes effect immediately and is retained after rebooting the host.

  1. Although Vmware have released 3i for free, it’s only good for 60 days after which your management has to be done by a Virtual Center!

They’re evil geniuses, I tell you!!!

  2. Weird… I’ve just been trawling the net for evidence of what you say and I can’t find any…
