First of all, what the hell is WSUS? WSUS (Windows Update Services) is Microsoft’s free patch management tool. In a corporate environment, it’s not wise or useful for every client to retrieve and apply updates from Microsoft. The least of which, the potential dent in corporate Internet access. WSUS is, effectively, a proxy for Windows Updates. One server configured as an update server retrieves all the updates for all the operating systems once and then farms them out to my clients.Clients in this case can include BOTH workstations and servers. “Are you insane releasing updates untested?!” I hear you ask. The answer is another feature of WSUS; the ability to release updates selectively to clients to test and THEN release to the greater network.

WSUS is a service you run internally on servers and pushes out to automatic update clients. WSUS can be configured to download updates from the Internet (Microsoft’s site) or an upstream WSUS server, allowing me to build a hierarchical infrastructre. This may be appropriate for departmental WSUS servers. Administrators have the control of approval of updates and WSUS downloads it from it configured upstream and issues it to clients. Approval can be done to particular groups of computers, or based on the criticality of of an update.

Administration in older versions of WSUS was done via a web interface. More recent releases have incorporated a MMC plug-in for administration.

This has been the arena of the corporate environments (configuration of Automatic Update clients via group policy) where I can afford a server to perform this task for me. In a small office/home office environment, I may not have the available resources to dedicate for one big, expensive Windows 2003 server to do WSUS. The following links detail ways “around” having to setup WSUS on a Windows 2003 box.

For workgroups, the following links are very helpful for setting up a WSUS server without a domain.

Because it’s a pain in the proverbial!

http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=pspmedia&thread.id=195916&view=by_date_ascending&page=1

Confused about how to use psp video 9 to convert and transfer videos onto your psp? Been scouring the internet to find a thorough guide that would show you how to do it practically click by click? Look no further! This guide is very easy to follow and will take you through the process step by step.

Just some things you should know before reading this guide:

The psp video 9 version used in this guide is version 1.74. It is recommended that you use this version as well to prevent confusion as you follow the steps.
If you are trying to get ripped dvds (video files that are in the vob format) onto your psp then read the entire guide.
If you just need to know how to convert and transfer video files (any video that’s not in the vob video file format) onto your psp then just read phases 2 and 3.
Please keep in mind that this guide begins AFTER you rip your DVDs to your computer. This is NOT a guide on how to rip DVDs.

PHASE 1Download pocketdivxencoder. (If you don’t have it already)

It is an executable, so you don’t have to install it. It is also free. Here is a link to its site where you can download it: http://www.pocketdivxencoder.net/.

Now, start up pocketdivxencoder. It will ask you what device you are using, click “pc.” (Those are just preset resolution settings. I have found that “pc” works best, though you can pick a different one it if you prefer.) Then click the folder icon under “1. File to encode.” (It is the icon that is to the left of the little computer screen that has the letters on it.) Browse to the folder that has your vob files in it. Select the first vob file.

(Note: It must be a vob file! Otherwise it won’t work. What this app does is it encodes vob movie files into avi files.)

Then select under “Output file” the folder you want the encoded files to go in. (This is where the finished files will go.) Now click the “advanced options button.” Under Advanced audio options click “direct audio stream copy.” (This is to prevent the audio in the movie from going out of sync during the encoding process.) Then click the “advanced options button” again to close the menu. You will see that under the output options, the audio quality option was automatically adjusted to the same audio quality your movie has. Now, slide the video quality bar all the way to 199. Then click “encode now.” It will take about an hour for a two and a half hour movie to finish, so go do something constructive while you’re waiting. When it’s done close pocketdivxencoder.
PHASE 2

Download psp video9. (If you don’t have it already)

It is not an executable like pocketdivxencoder so you will have to install it. But, like pocketdivxencoder, it is totally free. Here is a link to its site where you can download it: http://www.pspvideo9.com/.

After installing it, start it up.

I would recommend this video profile when using psp video9: AVC/320×240/16:9/29.97fps/768kbps Stereo/128kbps.

To change the default movie profile, go to the setup menu and under the settings tab click the drop down arrow for the one-click profile and look for the profile that I recommended in the list. Make sure you click “save” to save the settings. (Duh)

Now, go to the profiles tab and make sure you have these settings:

Mode: AVC > CBR
Resolution: 320×240
(Video) Bitrate: 768kbps
Framerate: 29.97fps
Passes: One (For best results Two, though it will take longer.)
Keyframe Interval: 250
Aspect Ratio: 16:9
(Audio) Bitrate: 128kbps
Channels: Stereo
Sample Rate: 48000 Hz
Volume: 100%
(Note that these are just recommended settings. Your settings don’t have to be exactly like this in order for the video to work on your psp. Though these are the settings I am using for this guide.)

After you have adjusted your settings, go to the convert menu and click “one-click transcode.” Find your video file and start transcoding. This will take a while. When it’s done, go to the copy menu and connect your psp using a usb cable. Put your psp in usb mode.

(Note: If you are sure that your psp is connected to your pc but a dialog box keeps coming up asking you to connect your psp, then go to setup and under the settings tab, click auto find.)

Now when in the copy menu, you should see a video file in the My Computer box.

(Note: This is IMPORTANT! If you used my recommended settings, the video files’ names should begin with MAQ. If so make sure that you put the video files into the AVC Folder on the psp.)

Switch to the AVC Folder in the psp. Do this by clicking the drop down arrow where it says “SP Folder” next to “My PSP” and choose “AVC Folder.” Then click and hold on the video file and drag it into the My PSP box.

(Note: You can change the video’s name etc, by highlighting the video you want to edit and going to the “file info tab.”)

A dialogue box will pop up showing that the movie is transferring to your psp. When the dialogue box closes, get out of usb mode on your psp by pressing the “circle button” and look under “video.” If you did everything correctly then your video should be there.

PHASE 3

WATCH IT!
